MED-EL Acquires Gene Therapy Assets from Rescue Hearing Inc.
In a move to bridge traditional implants with genetic medicine, Innsbruck-based MED-EL has acquired two clinical programs from Rescue Hearing Inc. targeting mutations in the MYO7A and STRC genes, which are responsible for persistent balance and auditory disorders in patients currently reliant on hearing aids.

The acquisition grants MED-EL full rights to develop and commercialize therapies designed to address the underlying biological mechanics of inner ear dysfunction. While the MYO7A program focuses on vestibular stability, the STRC initiative aims to treat genetic hearing loss at its source. Dr. Hinrich Staecker, a pioneer in inner ear gene therapy, will oversee the advancement of these programs as Chief Scientist, ensuring they integrate with the company’s existing suite of medical devices.
CEO Dr. Ingeborg Hochmair stated that the move is intended to augment, not replace, the firm’s current portfolio of hearing implants. By incorporating genetic interventions, the company seeks to offer a broader continuum of care for patients with complex sensory conditions. While the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, Rescue Hearing Inc. CEO Jim Ayala noted that the partnership ensures the longevity and clinical development of the research. Both companies intend to maintain an ongoing cooperation as these programs move through the development pipeline.
