Rockstar Games staff push for union recognition before GTA VI launch
Employees at the studio behind Grand Theft Auto VI have formally requested voluntary recognition for the IWGB Game Workers Union. This move follows a period of mounting tension, including last year’s termination of 30 staffers, which organizers have characterized as a deliberate attempt to suppress collective bargaining efforts within the company.

The union, which has been organizing across Rockstar’s sites in Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds, and London since 2019, asserts that it represents a significant portion of the workforce. Their demands center on establishing pay transparency, securing flexible working arrangements, and curbing the industry-wide practice of crunch. According to the union, their growing influence has already prompted Rockstar to implement unprecedented pay increases and new financial incentives.
Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar, has not responded to requests for comment. The push for recognition arrives at a critical juncture, with a final employment tribunal hearing regarding last year’s layoffs set for September. This timeline places the labor dispute directly ahead of the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, a title already drawing attention for its $79.99 price point. The effort joins a broader wave of industry organizing, following recent unionization milestones at Double Fine and Raven Software.
