American Lung Association Launches Initiative for Bronchiectasis Care

The condition occurs when the bronchial walls thicken and widen due to chronic inflammation, leading to scarring that prevents the airways from clearing mucus effectively. This buildup causes persistent coughing, shortness of breath, and heightened susceptibility to infections. Because these symptoms mirror those of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, patients often face delays in receiving an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care.

Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, emphasized that misidentification remains a primary barrier to treatment. While no cure exists for the progressive disease, the association’s new partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim focuses on helping patients manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups. The initiative encourages those with unresolved respiratory issues to consult specialists early to establish customized care plans. By providing education on disease management and advocacy tools, the organization aims to help patients navigate treatment options and improve their quality of life.
