Freedom Mortgage Launches 14th Annual Rucksacks to Backpacks Drive
For the 14th consecutive year, Freedom Mortgage has partnered with the USO to launch its Rucksacks to Backpacks campaign. The initiative aims to alleviate the financial strain of back-to-school preparations for military families by providing backpacks and essential supplies to children of active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members.
Since its inception in 2012, the program has focused on ensuring students in grades K–8 are equipped with the tools necessary for academic success. These supplies are distributed through events at USO centers nationwide, often staffed by Freedom Mortgage employee volunteers. According to CEO Stanley C. Middleman, the campaign serves as a tangible expression of gratitude for the sacrifices made by military households.
The 2026 fundraising drive, operating under the company’s philanthropic arm, Freedom Cares, runs through July 31. Beyond online donations, the organization is facilitating physical supply collections at select corporate offices. Ben Leslie, Chief Development Officer at the USO, noted that the partnership remains a critical resource for maintaining community support for military families long after the school bells ring.
