Elon Musk dismisses rumors of a SpaceX smartphone prototype
Elon Musk has flatly rejected claims that SpaceX is developing a proprietary AI handset, labeling a recent report as entirely false. The denial follows a Wall Street Journal article alleging that the company showcased a slim, Qualcomm-powered prototype to investors prior to its recent initial public offering.
The report suggested the device featured a specialized operating system integrated with xAI capabilities, aiming to expand the company’s reach beyond satellite internet. This speculation gained traction alongside separate claims from the Financial Times, which reported that COO Gwynne Shotwell had discussed a potential mobile service connecting directly to the Starlink network.
Musk has long maintained a public reluctance toward hardware development in the mobile space. During an event in Pennsylvania last year, he famously remarked that the prospect of building a phone made him want to die, though he stopped short of issuing a permanent prohibition. This is not the first time such rumors have surfaced; similar claims regarding a Starlink-focused phone emerged in February, which Musk promptly refuted at the time. Currently, Starlink remains the only profitable segment of the SpaceX enterprise, fueling constant industry chatter about potential acquisitions or shifts into mobile network infrastructure.
