Rob Lea Completes Rare Double Seven Endurance Challenge
After 17 years of grueling climbs and open-water crossings, Park City athlete Rob Lea has become the first person to conquer both the Seven Summits and the Oceans Seven. His journey concluded on June 30 in Japan, where he successfully navigated the treacherous currents of the Tsugaru Strait.
The final leg of his "Double Seven" project required nearly 12 hours of swimming through dropping water temperatures. To prepare for the physical toll of the Tsugaru Strait, Lea intentionally gained 30 pounds, a strategic measure used by marathon swimmers to combat hypothermia during extended exposure. This success follows a failed attempt at the same stretch in 2023, marking the end of a pursuit that began in 2009 on the slopes of Aconcagua.
Lea’s feat bridges two distinct endurance worlds. The Seven Summits took him to the highest peaks of every continent, including Everest and the Vinson Massif, while the Oceans Seven demanded crossings of iconic channels such as the English Channel, the North Channel, and the Strait of Gibraltar. Throughout his career, which includes a 2019 "Ultimate World Triathlon" featuring a climb of Everest and a cross-country bike ride, the Realtor has leveraged his athletic profile to advocate for climate action and gender equality. Looking ahead, the athlete plans to prioritize recovery before identifying his next challenge.
