Skanska Secures $87 Million Contract to Fix Newark Dock Bridge

Three parallel vertical-lift bridges in Newark, New Jersey, are undergoing a major structural transformation as Amtrak moves to stabilize its critical Northeast Corridor infrastructure. Skanska has been tapped for the $87 million rehabilitation project, aiming to convert the aging movable spans into a permanent, fixed configuration by late 2028.

The project centers on decommissioning the movable spans that have long facilitated rail traffic across the waterway. By locking these structures into a fixed position, crews will eliminate the need for complex mechanical maintenance. The scope of work requires the removal of existing electrical and mechanical systems, the installation of permanent counterweight supports, and the rehabilitation of the underlying concrete piers.

Work on the site began in the second quarter of 2026. This contract, valued at approximately SEK 810 million, will be integrated into Skanska’s US order bookings for the same period. The project serves as a key component of Amtrak's broader effort to modernize its rail assets along the busy Northeast Corridor, ensuring long-term reliability for passenger transit through the region.
