Intesa Sanpaolo Completes Core IT Migration to Google Cloud in Italy
Intesa Sanpaolo has finalized a multi-year migration of its core IT systems to Google Cloud regions in Milan and Turin, hosted within TIM data centers. The project involved shifting over 800 applications to a cloud-native environment, marking a significant step in the bank's digital modernization strategy.
The transition replaces legacy on-premise infrastructure with a scalable, secure architecture designed to accelerate the bank's adoption of artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics. By leveraging TIM’s network connectivity and Google Cloud’s regional infrastructure, Intesa Sanpaolo successfully migrated mission-critical workloads without recording any major operational incidents. This setup ensures the bank meets strict data residency requirements while maintaining high-speed performance across its digital platforms.
Beyond the technical migration, the bank executed a large-scale workforce retraining initiative. More than 3,000 employees participated in the program, earning over 170 Google Cloud certifications. This effort aims to foster a cloud-first culture within the organization, supporting the development of Isytech, the group’s new digital technology platform. Massimo Proverbio, Chief Data, AI and Technology Officer at Intesa Sanpaolo, noted that the project fulfills the 2022-2025 technology goals and provides the necessary foundation for the bank's 2026-2029 business plan. The collaboration highlights a shift in the Italian banking sector toward hybrid infrastructure, where strategic autonomy is balanced with the flexibility of global cloud providers.
