Spain's Royal Academy of Engineering Elects Marcos López de Prado
Professor Marcos López de Prado has been elected as an international member of Spain’s Real Academia de Ingeniería, joining a prestigious group of only 71 scholars worldwide. The appointment recognizes his three-decade career bridging computational science with financial machine learning and his influence on the global investment industry.
The Academy, which operates under the patronage of King Felipe VI, selected López de Prado for his role in formalizing financial machine learning as a rigorous engineering discipline. His work has shifted how institutions apply statistical methods to complex market systems, moving beyond traditional analysis toward systematic, data-driven design. This election marks the first time a researcher residing in the United Arab Emirates has been inducted into the institution.
López de Prado currently serves as Global Head of Quantitative Research & Development at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and holds faculty positions at Cornell University and Khalifa University. His peers within the Academy include Nobel laureates and Turing Award winners, reflecting the high barrier for entry into the lifetime membership. The formal investiture ceremony is scheduled for October at the Palace of Villafranca in Madrid, where he will receive his medal and diploma. This honor follows his 2024 recognition by the Spanish government, which awarded him the Officer's Cross of the Royal Order of Civil Merit for his contributions to science and finance.
