AOC Backs El-Sayed in High-Stakes Michigan Senate Primary
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has thrown her weight behind Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s competitive Senate primary, marking her first endorsement of the 2026 cycle. The move signals a deepening divide within the Democratic Party as the progressive wing seeks to reshape the national political landscape ahead of November.
Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent voice among the Democratic base, is now the most influential figure to align with El-Sayed, the former public health director for Detroit. Current polling places him ahead of establishment-backed candidates, including Representative Haley Stevens and state Senator Mallory McMorrow. The August 4 primary winner will face Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in a contest that could prove decisive for Democratic control of the Senate.
This endorsement highlights a clear rift in party leadership. While Ocasio-Cortez views the race as existential, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has aligned with Stevens. Other progressives, such as Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chris Murphy, have signaled support for McMorrow. Despite these tensions, El-Sayed maintains a robust coalition of allies, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Chris Van Hollen, alongside several progressive House members.
El-Sayed faces a significant financial hurdle as he avoids corporate donations. His primary opponent, Stevens, has access to over $16 million in super PAC spending, including heavy investment from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s United Democracy Project. This battle tests whether grassroots mobilization can overcome the influence of corporate PACs and institutional spending. According to pollster Adam Carlson, a victory for El-Sayed in such a pivotal swing state would challenge the long-held party assumption that moderation is the only path to electoral success.
