Microsoft Unveils Project Solara to Power AI Agent Hardware
At its Build 2026 conference, Microsoft introduced Project Solara, a dedicated operating system engineered specifically for AI agent gadgets. Departing from its reliance on Windows, the company built this new platform on an Android foundation, aiming to provide a lightweight, secure environment for hardware manufacturers to deploy autonomous agent experiences.
Microsoft showcased two reference designs to illustrate the platform's potential: a desktop display reminiscent of an Amazon Echo Show and a wearable badge for workplace environments. The desk unit utilizes facial recognition to trigger agent access, while the badge integrates a camera and fingerprint scanner, allowing users to instantly transcribe conversations or grant the AI visual context of their surroundings.
Rather than manufacturing these devices itself, Microsoft intends for Project Solara to serve as a blueprint for third-party hardware makers. Microsoft fellow Steven Bathiche described the platform as highly flexible, capable of balancing the resource constraints of low-power devices with the rigorous security and management requirements of enterprise IT departments. Early pilots are already slated for companies including Best Buy, CVS Healthcare, Target, and AccuWeather. By utilizing the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform—a tailored version of Android—the company seeks to standardize how AI agents interact with the physical world across diverse, portable form factors.
