Segway Leverages World Cup to Push Micromobility Adoption in Mexico

With football fans flooding Mexican cities for the 2026 World Cup, Segway is banking on a surge of new riders to cement its presence. Partnering with operators Whoosh and JET, the company has launched aggressive promotional campaigns, including free rides and deep discounts, to integrate e-scooters into the tournament’s transit infrastructure.

The strategy is yielding measurable results. In collaboration with Whoosh, riders racked up 54,413 promotional minutes through June 26, proving that scooters are serving as more than just last-mile connectors. Users averaged 25.1 minutes per trip, suggesting the vehicles are becoming a primary transit choice during high-traffic match days. Perhaps most significantly for long-term growth, 89% of Whoosh participants during the campaign were first-time users, signaling a successful lowering of barriers to entry.

Simultaneously, the JET partnership in Mexico City has pivoted from an initial free-ride trial to a 50% discount program running through July 5. By leveraging the promotional code SEGWAYJET50, commuters and visitors can maintain access to subsidized travel for the remainder of the tournament. Jasper Luan, Director of Market and Solutions at Segway-Ninebot, framed the initiative as a proof-of-concept for sustainable transit during major events. Victor Coelho, PR Manager for JET in Latin America, echoed this, noting that the combination of local operational expertise and Segway’s global reach is essential for accelerating the adoption of electric transit in the region.
