In Greece, fires near Thessaloniki and Athens have destroyed factories and homes, prompting warnings about toxic smoke containing carcinogenic substances like benzene and dioxins. Experts suggest these events would be virtually impossible without the influence of climate change driven by fossil fuel consumption, leaving officials to brace for a prolonged and volatile season.
