Ten Middle Schoolers Named Finalists in 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge

The finalists represent a diverse group of young innovators from across the United States, including students from Massachusetts, Florida, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon, Minnesota, California, Virginia, and Tennessee. Each participant initially submitted a one- to two-minute video pitch detailing an original project designed to address a specific technological challenge. A panel of 3M scientists and education leaders evaluated these entries based on scientific rigor, creativity, and communication skills.

Over the coming months, the finalists will pair with 3M scientist mentors to refine their prototypes and gain hands-on experience. The competition culminates on October 12-13 at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. There, the students will face a series of live challenges and present their work to judges before one winner is crowned America’s Top Young Scientist. The program has a track record of launching young careers, with past alumni going on to receive recognition from TIME and Forbes for their contributions to fields ranging from cybersecurity to environmental health.
