Meta Settles Social Media Lawsuit with Kentucky School District

Facing mounting pressure over its impact on adolescent mental health, Meta has reached a settlement with Kentucky’s Breathitt County School District. The agreement arrives just as the company prepared for the first bellwether trial in a sprawling federal litigation effort involving hundreds of school districts across the United States.

The settlement concludes a high-stakes dispute centered on the financial burden placed on schools to address social media-related harm. While the specific financial terms remain private, the move follows similar resolutions involving Google’s YouTube, Snap, and TikTok. These companies, like Meta, face a massive wave of claims from state attorneys general, individuals, and school districts seeking compensation for the resources required to support struggling students.

This resolution serves as a critical indicator for the broader multidistrict litigation, where test trials are used to gauge potential outcomes for over 1,200 pending cases. Plaintiffs' legal team, including Lexi Hazam and Previn Warren, indicated the focus now shifts entirely to these remaining districts. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone characterized the resolution as an amicable end to the immediate conflict, reiterating the company’s pivot toward tools like Teen Accounts and expanded parental oversight to mitigate online risks.
