iFixit pivots from gadgets to home repair with the Megalodon driver

Known for dissecting smartphones and laptops, iFixit is shifting its focus to the living room and garage. The company just launched the $34.95 Megalodon Driver Kit, a collection of tools specifically curated for assembling furniture, tinkering with automotive parts, and tackling common household appliance repairs.

The centerpiece of this set is a custom-engineered screwdriver featuring a distinct blue Swivel Grip Cap. Designed to replace traditional ratcheting mechanisms, the tool allows users to spin the handle freely for quick screw removal while keeping the cap steady. A downward push on the grip locks the driver into a static position, providing the necessary leverage for high-torque tasks without requiring the user to toggle complex switches.

iFixit has packed the kit with 16 specialty bits, each featuring an extended 2-inch shank. These longer profiles are intended to reach deep-seated fasteners often found in appliances or hidden behind panels, a common frustration in home maintenance. By hand-selecting this specific bit assortment, the company aims to cover the most frequent hardware configurations encountered in general DIY projects and flat-pack furniture assembly.
