GreenPath Joins PBS Opportunity Knocks as Financial Counseling Partner

The Farmington Hills-based nonprofit GreenPath Financial Wellness will serve as the exclusive financial counseling partner for the third season of Opportunity Knocks, a PBS series that tracks families working to overcome debt and housing instability through professional guidance rather than reality-television conflict.

The upcoming season shifts its focus to single mothers navigating the systemic pressures of predatory lending and income volatility. Instead of the elimination-style tropes common in the genre, the show pairs participants with coaches Jean Chatzky, Patrice Washington, and Louis Barajas to provide actionable roadmaps for economic recovery. GreenPath’s role centers on bridging the gap between feeling overwhelmed and taking the first concrete steps toward stability.

Kristen Holt, president and CEO of GreenPath, emphasized that the shame surrounding financial hardship often prevents individuals from seeking aid until a crisis peaks. By integrating one-on-one counseling into the series, the program aims to demystify the process of budgeting and debt management. The model relies on the efficacy of past cycles; according to The Opportunity Initiative, families featured since the show's inception have seen an average credit score increase of 88 points and a 55% reduction in total debt over five years. The season, presented by Zip Co, will be available across PBS broadcast channels and streaming platforms.
