Trump and Carney Clash Over Canada’s Sovereignty in Oval Office
During an Oval Office meeting on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly rejected President Donald Trump’s recurring suggestion that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state. While Trump teased the prospect with a cryptic "never say never," Carney countered with a quiet but emphatic "never, never, never."

Carney, representing the center-left Labour Party, framed the president’s annexation rhetoric as a mere "wish" rather than a grounded political reality. During their talks in Washington, D.C., the Prime Minister appealed to Trump’s background in real estate, reminding him that some properties are simply not for sale. Despite the friction over national sovereignty, Carney acknowledged that Trump had helped revitalize international security, attempting to strike a balance between diplomatic courtesy and firm resistance.
The meeting also touched on the ongoing trade dispute, specifically the 25% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian goods. Carney noted that the president appeared more willing to discuss potential tariff reductions, signaling a shift toward formal negotiations. While Trump suggested he would cease pushing for the annexation of Canada unless the topic was raised by others, he maintained that any future trade agreement remains a matter of mutual consent between sovereign nations. Carney confirmed that further discussions regarding a new trade deal are expected in the coming weeks.
