Meta to disable smart glasses camera if privacy light is tampered with

Meta is rolling out a software update that automatically kills the camera functionality on its smart glasses if the device detects damage to the privacy LED indicator. This move targets users who have physically drilled into or destroyed the light to record others without their knowledge or visible consent.

The company previously attempted to discourage such tampering by triggering a prompt whenever the light was obstructed by tape. However, modders quickly bypassed these software blocks, prompting a more aggressive hardware-aware response. Alex Himel, Meta’s VP of wearables, confirmed the update follows internal concerns regarding the misuse of the devices as they gain wider adoption.

This shift arrives amid mounting scrutiny over the product line. Reports of bad actors using the glasses to harass women have fueled a wave of public resistance, with several institutions moving to prohibit the eyewear entirely. New York State officials plan to ban camera glasses from courtrooms starting later this month, mirroring similar restrictions recently enacted in Philadelphia and across various cruise lines. These measures coincide with broader public outcry over Meta’s rumored plans to integrate facial recognition technology into its wearable hardware.
