Xbox Layoffs Hit id Software as Workforce Cut by Half

Former staffer Michael Maynard confirmed the scale of the exit, noting that nearly half the studio was let go despite their work on the industry-leading id Tech engine. The cuts arrive on the same day the studio launched a major expansion for its latest title. The Communications Workers of America (CWA) condemned the move, with vice president Derrick Osobase warning that such drastic downsizing threatens the future quality and development speed of iconic franchises like Quake and Fallout.

John Romero, cofounder of the studio, expressed solidarity with those displaced, acknowledging the personal toll of leaving a legacy project. This reduction is part of a wider fiscal strategy at Microsoft, which plans to shed roughly 3,200 roles across its gaming division through June 2027. While ZeniMax-owned studios like Bethesda and id Software are bearing the brunt of the immediate impact, leadership at other divisions, including Blizzard Entertainment, has signaled that further organizational updates remain forthcoming.
