AFFOA Launches Defense Textile Challenge to Combat Chemical Hazards
Advanced Functional Fabrics of America has opened a national search for textile materials capable of shielding warfighters from hydrofluoric acid and volatile rocket fuels. Sponsored by the CPE CBRND through the SPARK incubator, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between commercial innovation and critical battlefield protection requirements.

The initiative seeks high-readiness textile solutions that maintain durability and flexibility without sacrificing comfort. Innovations will be evaluated by a panel of government and industry experts to ensure they meet the rigorous performance standards required for modern defense operations. Manufacturers, startups, and academic researchers are invited to attend an Industry Day on August 4, 2026, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. This session offers direct access to technical experts and operational end users, providing clarity on the specific chemical threats currently facing the Joint Force.
Following the submission of candidate materials, up to three semifinalists will be selected to receive a $5,000 prize and proceed to independent validation. A final winner will be awarded an additional $5,000. Beyond the monetary incentives, the challenge serves as a pipeline for transitioning promising technologies into the defense industrial base. The program highlights the ongoing efforts of AFFOA to align private sector manufacturing breakthroughs with national security needs in contested environments.
