The Amble One: A Minimalist EV for the Neighborhood

Lisbon-based startup Amble is challenging the trend of bloated, overpowered SUVs by introducing the Amble One, a street-legal, neo-retro buggy. Designed as a functional second vehicle for short trips, the compact EV aims to replace the oversized trucks currently dominating American driveways with a simpler, more nimble alternative.

The Amble One steers clear of the industry’s obsession with high-speed performance and self-driving tech. Instead, it leans into utility and design, featuring an open-air cabin, leather and cork accents, and a modular cargo system. Weighing under 450 kilograms to comply with European L7e quadricycle regulations, the vehicle is powered by a 15kW motor and an 11kWh battery. It reaches a top speed of 40 mph and offers a range of 62 miles, making it ideal for errands rather than highway travel.

Behind the project is a team with deep industry pedigree, including alumni from Apple, Audi, and the e-bike company Cowboy. Design lead Julian Hoenig, who contributed to the Apple Watch and Audi R8, helped craft the buggy’s aesthetic, which draws inspiration from the Lunar Rover and the G-Wagen. CEO Adrien Roose notes that while the initial plan focused on resort fleets, strong consumer interest has pushed the company to accelerate its rollout for the US market. With over 1,000 reservations already placed, Amble is targeting a $25,000 starting price and aims to begin deliveries by 2028. By positioning the vehicle as a purposeful counterpart to the massive trucks common in the Sun Belt, the company hopes to carve out a permanent niche in the American garage.
