Esports World Cup Kicks Off in Paris with Record $75 Million Purse
Paris is playing host to the first international edition of the Esports World Cup, a seven-week spectacle gathering 2,000 elite competitors from over 100 countries. Running through August 23 at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, the event marks a major expansion for the tournament beyond its original Saudi Arabian roots.
The tournament features 25 distinct competitions across 24 popular titles, ranging from tactical shooters like Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT to strategic staples like Dota 2 and League of Legends. Beyond individual glory, the event centers on the Club Championship, a rigorous leaderboard format designed to reward organizational depth and consistency. Out of the record-breaking $75 million prize pool, $30 million is reserved specifically for club standings, with $7 million earmarked for the eventual champion.
This year’s edition benefits from a massive distribution network, including 100 broadcast partners and 5,000 co-streamers, representing a 42% increase in creator participation year-over-year. High-profile ambassadors Cristiano Ronaldo and Magnus Carlsen are returning to support the event, underscoring the organizers' goal to bridge the gap between traditional sports and competitive gaming. French Minister of Sports Marina Ferrari noted that the partnership reflects France’s broader commitment to structuring the esports sector, with a national development strategy for 2026–2030 expected later this year.
