ACA Premiums Poised for Double-Digit Hikes in 2027
Americans face a second consecutive year of surging healthcare costs as insurers propose a median 14% premium increase for 2027. The hikes follow the expiration of enhanced subsidies, a decision by President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans that has already prompted over 5 million people to drop their ACA coverage.

The analysis from KFF and the Peterson Center on Healthcare reveals that if these proposed rates hold, typical marketplace premiums will have climbed by more than one-third over a two-year period. At least 20 insurers have already filed requests for increases exceeding 20% for the upcoming year. Experts attribute this volatility to a shifting risk pool; as healthier enrollees exit the marketplace due to higher costs, the remaining base is sicker and more expensive to cover, creating a compounding effect on rate calculations.
Critics argue the situation is a direct consequence of policy choices made in Washington. Leslie Dach, chair of Protect Our Care, characterized the expiration of tax credits as a deliberate move to fund corporate tax breaks at the expense of family budgets. Meanwhile, Democratic National Committee official Kendall Witmer emphasized that rising medical bills are compounding the financial pressure on households already struggling with inflation. Since the lapse of the subsidies last December, the decline in enrollment has accelerated, leaving millions to navigate an increasingly unaffordable insurance market.
