Strathcona Resources Hits Milestone at Meota Central Thermal Project
Strathcona Resources has achieved first steam at its Meota Central thermal oil project in Alberta, marking a successful end to an 18-month construction phase. The facility, completed for $345 million, is now on track to begin oil production by the end of the third quarter of 2026.

The project finished two months ahead of schedule and roughly 3% under its capital budget. Safety metrics remained a priority throughout the build, with the company recording zero lost-time incidents across 370,000 man-hours. The development is designed to tap into the high-quality Waseca reservoir, which the company estimates holds a reserves life index of approximately 30 years at nameplate capacity.
Management expects the site to reach a peak production rate of 13,000 barrels per day by mid-2027. This output is central to the company’s broader growth strategy, which aims to boost total corporate production from 125,000 barrels per day in 2026 to 300,000 barrels per day by 2035. Strathcona plans to showcase the facility and its nearby Hamlin Rail Terminal to analysts and investors during a site tour on July 9, 2026.
