AEON Integrates OpenBCB to Bring Crypto Payments to Bolivia
Bolivia’s rapidly digitizing economy has gained a new bridge to global digital assets as AEON expands its settlement infrastructure into the country. By integrating with the national OpenBCB QR standard, the network allows consumers to pay with cryptocurrency while merchants receive seamless, automated settlements in Bolivian Bolivianos.

The expansion places AEON at the center of a payment ecosystem that has seen transaction volumes surge by more than 4,700% between 2021 and 2024. Under the new integration, the checkout process remains transparent to local vendors: shoppers scan standard OpenBCB QR codes using wallets like Binance, OKX, or Solana Pay, while AEON handles the backend conversion to local currency in real time. This removes the need for merchants to manage digital asset volatility or alter their existing point-of-sale hardware.
Beyond consumer retail, the move serves a broader architectural goal: providing the financial plumbing necessary for autonomous AI agents to interact with the physical world. By anchoring into established payment rails, AEON aims to allow these agents to execute real-world transactions without requiring merchants to adopt new banking protocols. The platform currently supports over 50 million merchants globally, including major franchises such as McDonald's and UNIQLO, as it continues to roll out localized infrastructure across Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
