ClearCam Secures Air Force Contract for AI Surgical Imaging

A federal investment of $74,360 is propelling Austin-based ClearCam into the military medical sector. The company secured an AFWERX Phase I award to adapt its ClearScope IQ platform—a system combining mechanical lens cleaning with AI-driven visualization—for use within Department of the Air Force surgical operations.

The project aims to integrate artificial intelligence into standard minimally invasive surgical procedures, focusing on the automatic detection and correction of visualization degradation. By partnering with the Air Force Research Laboratory, ClearCam intends to refine its technology to support surgical readiness and the development of responsive, intelligent operating room equipment. Christopher Idelson, the company's CTO and co-founder, noted that the research will establish a framework for tools that anticipate and resolve visibility issues in real time.

For CEO Dr. John Uecker, the contract represents a professional milestone that bridges his dual background in medicine and military service. The award follows the Department of the Air Force’s ongoing efforts to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research process, which has sought to accelerate the adoption of civilian technological breakthroughs for defense applications since 2018. ClearCam began the project following its official notification on June 25, 2026, marking a transition from their existing civilian laparoscopy solutions toward broader applications in military trauma and field medicine.
