Talisman Design Revives the PDA Era with the PocketMage
Talisman Design is attempting to resurrect the long-forgotten personal digital assistant with the PocketMage, a clamshell device featuring a tactile keyboard and a dual-screen setup. Currently crowdfunding on Crowd Supply, the gadget merges the nostalgic aesthetic of a Palm Pilot with modern e-paper and OLED display technology.
The hardware relies on an ESP32-S3 microcontroller, paired with 2MB of RAM and 16MB of onboard storage, which is expandable via microSD. Rather than mimicking a smartphone, the device focuses on focused productivity with pre-installed tools like a calendar, journal, dictionary, and a Markdown-based text editor. Users can also access additional utilities such as a calculator, an ebook reader, and a basic web browser.
Visual output is split between a 3.1-inch e-paper screen with a 320x240 resolution for core tasks and a secondary 1.8-inch OLED strip above the keyboard for high-refresh-rate menu navigation. Navigation on the main screen is handled by a capacitive touch bar rather than a touchscreen. Backers can choose between a $235 pre-assembled unit or a $185 DIY kit, though the project faces a lengthy development cycle with shipments not expected until at least March 2027.
