St. Johns County Debuts Monthly Stewardship Video Series
St. Johns County officials have launched the SJC Stewardship Series, a monthly video initiative designed to spotlight the region's cultural heritage and conservation milestones. The premiere installment features environmental specialist Megan Wright guiding viewers through the historical significance and preservation challenges of the Fort Matanzas National Monument.
Built by Spanish forces in 1742, the fort served as a vital defense for the southern approach to St. Augustine. The structure, constructed atop a foundation of pine timbers and oyster shells, remains a landmark of military architecture, featuring an observation deck and powder magazine that overlook the Matanzas River. Designated a National Monument in 1924, it stands as the oldest recorded structure in the county outside of the city limits.
This project aligns with the broader St. Johns County Strategic Plan, which prioritizes community trust and environmental conservation. Beyond the initial episode, the county plans to release monthly installments highlighting various locations of historic importance. Residents can access the series through the county’s social media channels, the official SJC Stewardship web page, and the local GovTV broadcast network.
