Andy Burnham’s Gaza Apology Sparks Backlash

Andy Burnham, the frontrunner to replace former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, issued a televised apology Thursday for his party’s handling of the war in Gaza. While the former Manchester mayor acknowledged the humanitarian catastrophe, his refusal to label the conflict a genocide left critics demanding more substantive political action.

In a three-minute video, Burnham described the suffering in Gaza as a "scar on our collective conscience," admitting that the British government had been too slow to advocate for a ceasefire. He proposed tighter sanctions on Israeli ministers and potential trade bans on goods from illegal settlements, citing the "unacceptable" expansion of military control and settler violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. He maintained, however, that determinations regarding war crimes should remain with international courts rather than politicians.

This deference to the judiciary drew immediate fire from activists and opposition leaders. Green Party head Zack Polanski challenged Burnham to clarify whether he would end Britain's participation in the war as prime minister, while Mothin Ali of the Green Party suggested the focus on legal courts is a strategic retreat to avoid the legal obligation to halt arms sales. Adnan Hmidan of the Palestinian Forum in Britain echoed these concerns, noting that acknowledgment alone is insufficient to address the scale of the devastation.

Political analysts view the statement as a delicate balancing act. Tim Bale, a professor at Queen Mary University of London, suggested the remarks are likely symbolic, intended to repair internal party fractures without alienating a staunchly pro-Israel U.S. administration. Despite the pressure to take a firmer stance, Burnham’s omission of the term "genocide" remains a primary point of contention for those who argue that the British government is already complicit in the ongoing crisis.
