Legal Scholars Warn of Potential Genocide in Gaza

The signatories emphasize that the scale and severity of current operations demand urgent global intervention.

The scholars highlight that the current military campaign, triggered by the October 7 Hamas attack, represents an unprecedented escalation. They point to the total blockade of fuel, electricity, and water, alongside the mass evacuation order for 1.1 million people in northern Gaza, as evidence of an intent to destroy the population. The statement notes that the rhetoric employed by Israeli officials—including Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s reference to "human animals"—mirrors language historically linked to the incitement of mass atrocities.

Raz Segal, an associate professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Stockton University, characterizes the situation as a "textbook case of genocide." The signatories are calling on the United Nations and the International Criminal Court to launch immediate investigations. They urge the international community to fulfill its legal obligation to prevent such crimes, arguing that the current bombardment and restriction of life-sustaining conditions are conducted with clear genocidal intent.
