Meta Kills AI Feature Amid Deepfake Backlash

After immediate pushback from creators and privacy advocates, Meta has disabled a controversial Instagram tool that allowed users to generate AI imagery using content from public accounts. The feature, which functioned by tagging accounts to reference their photos, faced intense scrutiny over unauthorized use of personal likeness and safety risks.

The company confirmed the rollback in an update to its Muse Image AI documentation, acknowledging that the tool missed the mark. Initially, Meta intended the feature to serve as a creative reference point, but critics argued the design ignored user consent by defaulting all public accounts into the model's training loop.

Public outcry centered on the potential for abuse, specifically the creation of non-consensual deepfakes. Haley McNamara of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation warned that the tool provided an easy vector for sextortion, labeling the requirement for individuals to manually opt out as unacceptable. The Screen Actors Guild also intervened, advising its members to actively secure their profiles against the feature before Meta ultimately pulled the plug entirely.
