Karmanos Cancer Institute Upgrades App to Simplify Clinical Trial Access

The updated platform, live on Apple and Google stores, serves as a direct pipeline to the institute's portfolio of more than 160 active protocols. By integrating data from the National Cancer Institute’s drug dictionary and providing direct links to clinicaltrials.gov, the interface aims to demystify the enrollment process. Users can now filter by specific cancer types, investigators, or therapy phases, and initiate appointment requests directly through the software.

Dr. Anthony Shields, associate center director of Clinical Science, emphasizes that the tool is designed to empower patients to advocate for their own care options before standard therapies are exhausted. With 33 principal investigators operating across 13 locations, the institute intends for the app to function as a localized, high-speed alternative to broader national databases. The update also introduces offline synchronization, ensuring that physicians and patients maintain access to vital trial information even in environments with limited connectivity.
