Rubio Vows to Dismantle International Criminal Court

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has launched a formal campaign to dismantle the International Criminal Court, declaring that the United States will use its full diplomatic and economic power to disable the Hague-based tribunal, which he accused of waging a legal war against American sovereignty and its officials.

The State Department confirmed a whole-of-government strategy to neutralize the court, including plans for increased sanctions, visa revocations, and travel bans against ICC personnel. Rubio justified the move in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, arguing that the tribunal poses a constant risk of persecution to US service members and federal prosecutors. The administration is also pressuring other nations to align with this offensive, despite the fact that the United States is not a party to the Rome Statute.

Human rights advocates have criticized the aggressive stance as an assault on the global rules-based order. Raed Jarrar of Democracy for the Arab World Now noted that such actions imply the powerful are above the law, potentially undermining justice efforts in regions ranging from Ukraine to Sudan. Kenneth Roth, former executive director of Human Rights Watch, challenged Rubio's rhetoric, pointing out that the ICC only exercises jurisdiction within the territory of states that invite its oversight, contradicting the administration's claims of arbitrary overreach.
