Diversified Technologies Debuts Hybrid MVDC Circuit Breaker
Engineers at Bedford-based Diversified Technologies have unveiled a hybrid circuit breaker designed to handle 5 to 20 kV medium-voltage DC systems. By merging mechanical contacts with solid-state switches, the device eliminates hazardous arc flashes and enables safe power management for high-demand environments like data centers and naval vessels.

The system operates through a three-step sequence, shifting from low-loss metal-to-metal conduction to semiconductor-based fault isolation. This design allows the breaker to open under full voltage and current without requiring a zero crossing. Because the solid-state components only engage during fault conditions, the unit maintains high efficiency while significantly extending contact life beyond one million cycles.
By replacing traditional mechanical separation, the technology reduces the mechanical stress and damage typically caused by fault currents. The new units start at $10,000, with final pricing determined by specific voltage and current requirements. This hybrid approach aims to provide the rapid recovery necessary for sensitive infrastructure that cannot afford downtime during electrical irregularities.
