Velocys Scales Microchannel Tech for Larger SAF Projects

With the immediate release of the AlphaCore 400, Velocys is pushing its microchannel Fischer-Tropsch technology into higher-capacity sustainable aviation fuel facilities. The move signals a strategic shift for the Houston and Oxford-based company, aiming to lower capital costs while simplifying operations for large-scale commercial deployments.

The AlphaCore 400 doubles the capacity of previous reactor iterations by integrating more microchannel cores into a single shell. By allowing developers to utilize fewer reactor trains for the same production output, the design reduces the project footprint and lowers the overall cost per unit of fuel produced. This hardware evolution is intended to make the company's proprietary technology viable for centralized facilities and larger hub-and-spoke feedstock models, rather than being limited to smaller, distributed production sites.

Matthew Viergutz, CEO of Velocys, noted that the reactor is not merely a scaling exercise but a foundational element of a broader roadmap to improve project economics. The company plans to continue this trajectory with future platforms designed to further reduce equipment counts. Despite the increase in size, the design maintains the same catalyst and process principles as previous generations, providing developers with a predictable path for scaling their operations from pilot projects to full-scale commercial refineries.
