Asus to Release Standalone OLED Xbox Ally X After Bundle Backlash

Asus is pivoting from its initial plan to package the OLED Xbox Ally X exclusively with expensive AR glasses. Company spokesperson Anthony Spence confirmed that a standalone version of the handheld is currently in development, offering a more accessible path for gamers eyeing the device's refined hardware and display.

After spending two hours testing the device at Asus’ California offices, the hardware proves to be a formidable competitor in the portable market, potentially challenging the MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus. The 7.4-inch OLED panel stands out as a primary advantage. Despite the MSI Claw 8 EX featuring a larger 8-inch IPS display and the Lenovo Legion Go 2 opting for an 8.8-inch screen, the Ally X20 delivers superior clarity. Its anti-glare cover glass and higher peak brightness make the 1080p resolution feel more immersive than higher-resolution alternatives currently on the market.

Beyond visual performance, the device introduces subtle quality-of-life adjustments, such as a green-lit Xbox button that allows for brightness control or complete deactivation. While the current market is dominated by the $1,000 Asus Xbox Ally X and the high-end $1,800 MSI Claw 8 EX, this upcoming OLED model carves out a middle ground. It targets players seeking a premium, refined handheld experience without the constraints of forced hardware bundles. Asus has yet to finalize a specific release date, with further announcements expected in the coming months.
