OpenAI Prepares Hardware Push with AI-Powered Smart Speaker
OpenAI plans to challenge the home assistant market with a screenless, camera-equipped smart speaker designed to interpret its physical surroundings. The device, which promises humanlike interaction through mechanical movement and voice integration, serves as a cornerstone for a broader hardware strategy currently under development by the AI research firm.

The portable, battery-operated device will lean on GPT-Live to manage smart home controls, answer queries, and process messages. Reports suggest the speaker will utilize sensors to recognize people and objects, bridging the gap between digital assistance and physical presence. This hardware marks the beginning of a five-product roadmap developed in collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive, whose company, io Products, was acquired by OpenAI for approximately $6.5 billion.
While the speaker is slated for a 2027 debut, the timing of the leak coincides with legal friction between OpenAI and Apple. Apple recently filed a lawsuit alleging the theft of proprietary hardware secrets, a claim OpenAI dismissed as meritless in a statement released Tuesday. Beyond the speaker, OpenAI continues to expand its physical footprint, with a separate Codex Micro gadget scheduled for release on July 15th.
