commercetools Shifts Strategy to Modular Commerce Modernization
Enterprises traditionally forced into multi-year, full-scale replatforming now have an alternative path. Boston-based commercetools is releasing standalone modules for cart, order management, and product catalog, allowing companies to upgrade specific commerce capabilities without discarding their existing technology stacks or committing to a total overhaul.
The new offerings, Core Commerce and Product Catalog, serve as independent modules built on the company’s API-native Sphere platform. By decoupling these functions, commercetools aims to help businesses navigate the rising pressure to integrate AI-powered and autonomous commerce tools without the typical implementation risks associated with legacy systems.
CEO Doug McNary noted that companies can no longer afford years-long modernization cycles. These modules allow for incremental adoption, enabling firms to address immediate bottlenecks—such as scaling checkout processes for peak traffic or managing millions of SKUs—while maintaining a clear path toward a full-platform transition as their needs evolve. The release follows a broader industry trend toward best-of-breed architectures, where organizations prioritize flexibility and speed-to-value over monolithic system replacements.
