Sheetz Overhauls Edge Infrastructure by Migrating 830 Stores to StorMagic

Retailer Sheetz is replacing its VMware environment across 830 locations with StorMagic SvHCI, executing a remote migration that avoids both hardware refreshes and on-site technician visits. The company has already transitioned over 600 stores, maintaining a steady pace of 200 sites per month with minimal operational downtime.

The project leverages Sheetz’s existing Dell R440 and R450 server infrastructure, bypassing the need for capital-intensive hardware replacements. By shifting to a two-node hyperconverged architecture, the retailer aims to reduce complexity and streamline the management of critical services, including payment processing and loyalty programs. This transition builds upon a previous deployment where Sheetz utilized StorMagic SvSAN to improve in-store application resiliency.

Gary Sliver, director of platform engineering at Sheetz, noted that the remote migration strategy addresses the specific challenges of a 24/7/365 retail environment. According to Scott Mann, senior vice president of global sales at StorMagic, the efficiency of this rollout demonstrates that large-scale infrastructure shifts can be completed rapidly without the disruption typically associated with legacy system overhauls. The full migration is expected to conclude within four months.
