Bilirakis and Veasey Honored for Congressional Vision Advocacy
U.S. Representatives Gus Bilirakis and Marc Veasey received the Congressional Visionary Award from Prevent Blindness this week, honoring their bipartisan partnership as co-chairs of the Congressional Vision Caucus. The recognition highlights their legislative push to expand eye care access and secure federal funding for vital vision health programs.
The award, presented at a June 9 reception at the U.S. Capitol, celebrates the pair’s efforts to elevate vision-related policy within the national dialogue. Prevent Blindness CEO Jeff Todd noted that the lawmakers have been instrumental in securing resources for sight-saving research and helping connect patients to essential care services.
Beyond their general advocacy, Bilirakis and Veasey have prioritized early intervention through the Early Detection of Vision Impairments for Children Act (H.R. 2527). First introduced in May 2024 and reintroduced in March 2025, the legislation aims to establish state and community grants to ensure children receive timely screenings and rehabilitation referrals. The bill currently holds the backing of 115 national organizations, with supporters now pushing for companion legislation in the U.S. Senate to broaden the program's reach.
