Tetrate Launches Token Brokering to Cap Runaway AI Agent Costs

San Francisco-based Tetrate has introduced a token-brokering control plane within its Agent Router Enterprise to address the surge in enterprise AI expenditures. By enforcing budget policies and sovereignty requirements at the gateway level, the system automatically routes inference requests to cost-optimized models without disrupting developer workflows.

Engineering teams currently face a paradox: while the unit price of inference models continues to plummet, total expenditures are rising as autonomous agents multiply the number of requests per task. According to the FinOps Foundation’s 2026 State of FinOps survey, 98 percent of practitioners now identify AI spend management as a primary priority. Tetrate aims to solve this by moving away from local, single-region proxies toward a distributed control plane that governs model access across entire fleets.

Administrators set unified policies—covering budget thresholds, approved providers, and regional sovereignty—through APIs and SDKs. When a specific model’s cost approaches a cap, the system triggers a circuit breaker, seamlessly rerouting requests to approved private or edge alternatives. This automation ensures that compliance and cost constraints remain active without requiring manual intervention from platform teams. Built upon the open-source Envoy AI Gateway, the feature is available immediately to existing subscribers, aiming to integrate directly into current development pipelines.
