Trump Administration Threatens New Sanctions Against ICC

The Trump administration has privately pressured the International Criminal Court to pledge immunity for Donald Trump and his top officials, threatening a fresh round of sanctions if the tribunal refuses to shield them from future prosecution for alleged war crimes committed during his second term in office.

An anonymous government official confirmed that Washington is demanding that ICC member states amend the Rome Statute to explicitly strip the court of jurisdiction over U.S. heads of state. The administration fears the court may target the president, vice president, and secretary of war once Trump leaves office in January 2029. This push for blanket immunity marks a significant escalation in tensions between the White House and the Hague, following earlier sanctions imposed in February after the court issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders.

Legal experts remain skeptical that these demands will gain traction. Kevin Jon Heller, a professor of international law at the University of Copenhagen, argued that member states are unlikely to compromise the court's founding principles to satisfy U.S. pressure. The administration's concern follows a series of controversial military actions during Trump's second term, including strikes in Iran, Somalia, and Yemen, as well as support for operations in Gaza that have drawn widespread allegations of genocide. While the White House continues its campaign of intimidation, the court has yet to signal any intent to pursue investigations into these specific U.S. actions.
