USPTO Integrates Clarivate AI to Streamline Trademark Image Searching
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has overhauled its public trademark search system, integrating AI-driven image recognition technology developed by Clarivate. This upgrade allows applicants and legal professionals to upload images directly into the database, replacing reliance on traditional classification codes with automated visual comparison tools.

The new functionality within the TM Search system uses advanced recognition models to identify visually similar marks that previously evaded conventional classification-based queries. By surfacing these matches automatically, the platform aims to reduce the complexity of the trademark clearance process and improve the overall accuracy of search results.
Sandra Mau, Vice President of Product Management for Intellectual Property at Clarivate, noted that visual similarity remains a foundational yet historically difficult aspect of trademark clearance. The deployment aligns with the agency’s goal of accelerating innovation by making the registration process more intuitive. Similar technology is already utilized across Clarivate’s proprietary suite of tools for law firms and corporate IP departments, reflecting a broader industry shift toward applying domain-specific AI to intellectual property management.
