A decorated clinician and WHO advisor, Dr. Matt Gaskell has been appointed as the first International Consultant on Gambling Policy for the Public Health Advocacy Institute. His move signals a sharper focus on legal and regulatory accountability for an industry currently facing intense scrutiny over its impact on public health.
Dr. Gaskell, honored with an MBE in 2025 for his services regarding gambling-related harm, brings a background in clinical treatment and policy formulation to the Boston-based nonprofit. As the founder of gambling harm clinics in northern England and a participant in the World Health Organization’s expert groups, he will collaborate with PHAI leadership to challenge the commercial tactics of betting firms and their sports league partners.
This appointment arrives as the Public Health Advocacy Institute ramps up its legal pressure on major industry players. In March 2026, the institute initiated a landmark lawsuit against entities including DraftKings, FanDuel, the NFL, and Genius Sports. The litigation alleges that these companies distribute dangerously addictive products designed to exploit consumer behavior. By integrating Dr. Gaskell’s expertise, the organization intends to bolster its strategy of using the civil justice system to curb deceptive practices and protect public safety.
