Sun Life and Claritev Automate Supplemental Health Claims

Sun Life U.S. and technology firm Claritev are launching an automated platform designed to simplify supplemental health payouts for self-funded employers. By utilizing machine learning to scan medical claims for eligibility, the partnership aims to bridge the gap between initial health events and the financial benefits employees are owed.

The collaboration targets a common friction point in corporate benefits, where employees often overlook critical illness, accident, or hospital indemnity coverage while navigating medical crises. Claritev’s system continuously monitors medical claim data to identify potential benefit triggers, allowing Sun Life to proactively notify employees of their eligibility. This shift replaces the traditional, manual process of filing claims with a more automated, data-driven approach.

Joi Tillman, president of Group Benefits at Sun Life U.S., noted that the integration provides a more cohesive experience for self-funded clients. By connecting disparate health plans with supplemental coverage, the firms seek to ensure faster financial support for those facing major injuries or illnesses. The service is HIPAA-compliant and available to any self-funded employer offering Sun Life supplemental products, regardless of whether they utilize the insurer’s stop-loss coverage. Policies featuring these new capabilities will be available for quoting effective January 1, 2027, though the service is currently excluded from Sun Life offerings in New York.
