Google Opens AI-Powered Video Editor Vids to All Users

After months restricted to Workspace and AI plan subscribers, Google is opening its Vids video editor to a broader audience. The platform, designed for rapid presentation assembly, now offers free users access to core templates and a selection of generative tools, though premium AI features remain behind a paywall.

The rollout brings Vids to a wider base, providing tools to organize storyboards, curate stock media, and integrate background music. While the free version retains the core functionality of the editor, it excludes the most advanced generative capabilities. Most notably, users will not have access to the new AI-generated avatar suite, which allows for the creation of 12 distinct characters to deliver scripted messages. Product director Vishnu Sivaji confirmed that while the app remains powerful, custom AI-generated avatars based on the user’s own likeness are not currently on the roadmap.

Simultaneously, Google is expanding the platform’s generative scope for paid subscribers. The update introduces a feature capable of producing 8-second video clips that incorporate specific product imagery, signaling a push toward more targeted business presentation tools. By positioning Vids as a streamlined alternative to complex editing software, Google aims to capture the market for quick, professional-grade visual communication without requiring extensive technical expertise.
