Free People Debuts Vintage-Inspired Surf Capsule with Rusty

Southern California surf heritage meets bohemian retail as Free People launches its first collaborative capsule with Rusty. The twelve-piece collection draws from late-1980s board culture, blending technical surf functionality with the Philadelphia-based brand’s signature aesthetic for an adventure-ready lineup available online and in select stores.

The partnership leans heavily into the history of Rusty Preisendorfer, the legendary shaper who founded the brand on a foundation of DIY skate and surf culture. The resulting apparel mirrors this history through retro silhouettes and functional design choices. Key pieces include the Turn It Up Long Board Short at $118, which utilizes a capri-length floral motif, and the After Sun Fleece Hoodie, an oversized layer intended for post-surf evenings.

Technical performance remains a focus, evidenced by the $98 Vacay Rashie and the $118 Low Key Romper, the latter of which is constructed from lightweight neoprene. The collection also offers a variety of swimwear, such as the Paradise Hotel bikini set, and accessories like the $48 garment-washed dad cap. Following the July 8th launch, the retailer plans to host community surf classes in Stone Harbor and Palm Beach to promote the release, highlighting the lifestyle connection between the two brands.
