Troy Jackson Secures Commanding Lead in Maine Senate Nomination Race
After Graham Platner’s sudden exit from the U.S. Senate race, former state Senate president Troy Jackson has surged ahead in the Democratic delegate count. Saturday’s nominating meetings across eight Maine counties revealed a robust volunteer-led effort, positioning the progressive candidate to likely secure the party's nomination for the 2026 election.
Jackson, a former logger with deep union ties, dominated the initial delegate selection process, securing at least 290 of the 319 delegates chosen on Saturday. His campaign success, bolstered by an endorsement from Senator Bernie Sanders, signals a rapid consolidation of support among the progressive base that had previously rallied behind Platner. Jackson swept 148 of 149 delegates in Cumberland County and maintained similar margins in Penobscot and Hancock counties.
In a video message to supporters, Jackson credited his volunteer network for the "extremely impressive organizational feat" required to pivot the campaign on short notice. The candidate, who has centered his platform on Medicare for All and ending military aid for Israel, is already preparing for a general election contest against five-term Republican incumbent Susan Collins. Recent polling from Wedgewood suggests a competitive race, with Jackson leading Collins 48% to 43% in a hypothetical matchup. As the remaining counties conclude their delegate selection on Sunday, the path to the July 25 convention appears increasingly clear for the former state legislator.
