Mapping the Khumbu Icefall: Drones Redefine Everest Safety

At altitudes exceeding 6,000 meters, where temperatures plummet below -20°C, the most dangerous stretch of the Mount Everest ascent is being transformed by aerial technology. Nepalese firm Airlift Technology is deploying DJI Matrice 4E drones to map the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, replacing high-risk foot reconnaissance with precise 3D digital modeling.

Before the 2026 climbing season, the critical task of routing climbers through the icefall fell to 'icefall doctors'—Sherpa teams who manually fixed ropes and ladders across shifting terrain. By utilizing the Matrice 4E to survey three square kilometers in just 3.5 hours, teams now generate centimeter-accurate maps using DJI Terra software. This process identifies crevasses and unstable seracs without requiring personnel to enter the zone blind.

The impact of this shift proved vital when a large-scale serac formation blocked all summit routes, stranding hundreds at Base Camp. Rather than relying on traditional, time-consuming scouting, the team utilized aerial data to identify safe corridors and expedite the restoration of the route. According to Raj Bikram Maharjan, CEO of Airlift Technology, this deployment marks a significant milestone for high-altitude expedition safety. Beyond immediate navigation, the high-resolution data creates a longitudinal archive of glacial movement, providing scientists with essential tools to monitor the rapid thinning of Himalayan glaciers as environmental conditions shift.
